August 4, 1943 - MGM releases The Man from Down Under (USA).
The film stars Charles Laughton as a crusty old Sergeant of the Queen's Australian army in World War I who befriends and raises two war orphans. Donna Reed plays the role of Mary Wilson, one of the orphans.
The movie was called "Hollywood's first full-length film dealing exclusively with Australia and Australians." Director Robert Leonard wanted to use establishing shots of Sydney but the censors would not permit the display of any aerial shots of the city.
